Records [manuscript], 1785-1877.

Records, 1785-1877, of the Alexandria, Va., Common Council, providing information on licenses (to sell alcohol, to maintain a private house of entertainment, to sell lottery tickets [1831], to provide auctioneering services, and to operate a circus or provide horsemanship shows [1865]). Topics also include taxes and bonds posted by such local officials as Inspectors of Tobacco, Hay, Wood and bark, Flour, Fish, the Keeper of the Poor and Workhouse, the Clerk of the Market and Market Stall accounts, the Superintendent of the Police, the Superintendent of the Night Watch, and the Keeper of the Powder House. Also include regulations concerning the Free School (1831) and the Female Free School (1849); street repairs and improvements; the board for public health and sanitation, especially with respect to conditions during the 1849 cholera epidemic; and transportation (a right of way negotiated with the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, 1849; and a comparison of lumber transport by water and rail, 1856). Topics also include regulations concerning public utilities (Washington and New Orleans Telegraph Company, 1949; and gas works, 1853); and results of local elections. Printed material, chiefly newspaper clippings reporting election results, dominate the post 1865 section. Some undated items appear at the end of the second reel, including a photograph of an unidentified freshman football team, ca. 1910.
